When you hear “orthodontics,” what do you think of? If you are like most people, one of the first things that will come to mind is braces, specifically using braces to straighten your teeth. While braces and straighter teeth are a part of orthodontics, this particular field of dentistry can also help align your bite and correct jaw problems. At Exceptional Dentistry, Dr. James Powell offers orthodontics in Palmdale, California, to treat a variety of problems. We welcome you to schedule your visit with our dentist and brace yourself for a straighter, more beautiful smile with our orthodontic treatment. We welcome you to schedule your visit by calling our office at (661) 349-7725 today.
Orthodontics is one of the nine recognized dental specialties. It is the branch of dentistry focused on correcting irregularities of the teeth and jaw, particularly the way that they are aligned and fit together. Orthodontics is used to correct problems such as:
- Crowded teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Misaligned teeth
- Bad bites (crossbite, open bite, underbite, overbite, etc.)
At Exceptional Dentistry, we offer traditional metal braces to help correct your misaligned teeth and bite. Braces are the tried-and-true orthodontic treatment, and gradually improve your smile by gently moving your teeth into their correct positions.
When you receive braces, a system of metal brackets, wires, and bands will be attached to the front of your teeth. The brackets will be cemented to the front surfaces of your teeth, and then connected to each other using the wires and bands. You will continue to meet with our dentist at regular intervals throughout your treatment, and at each appointment your wire will be adjusted to encourage tooth movement until your teeth have achieved their ideal position. Our dentist and team will also provide you with some instructions on foods to avoid during your treatment and the best ways to brush and floss while wearing braces. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions about your braces.
While many patients think of orthodontic treatment as an effective way to improve the appearance of their smile, orthodontics are also very beneficial to your oral health. Teeth that are straight and correctly aligned are easier to clean and care for, which reduces your risk for problems like tooth decay and periodontal disease. Straight teeth also make it easier for you to chew, eat, and speak properly.
