Bruxism can occur at any time, though it is much more common at night, and is frequently misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all due to the fact that it is one of several potential causes for tooth wear and damage. Only trained dental professionals can tell the difference between tooth damage caused by bruxism and tooth damage caused by overaggressive brushing or other factors. Common signs of nighttime teeth clenching and grinding include:

  • Chronic jaw pain, facial pain, and ear pain
  • Awakening with a tired or tight feeling in the jaw
  • Frequent tension headaches and migraines
  • Excessive tooth wear, leading to chipped, flattened, cracked, or very worn teeth
  • Extremely worn tooth enamel, exposing the inner layers of the tooth
  • Indentations on the side of the tongue
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Arthritis

If our dentist diagnoses you with bruxism, we may recommend an occlusal guard to protect your teeth from damage and prevent teeth grinding while you sleep. Occlusal guards, also known as night guards, are a type of dental orthotic worn at night, and effectively stop further damage from occurring. Occlusal guards not only halt and prevent the damage caused by bruxism, but also begin the process of “retraining” your mouth so that you stop clenching and grinding. After your bruxism is under control, our dentist will work with you to restore the function and appearance of your teeth so that you can once again enjoy a beautiful smile and go about your day-to-day activities in comfort.

If you suspect that you have bruxism, please call Exceptional Dentistry and make an appointment with our dentist to discuss getting a custom occlusal guard. Dr. James Powell will thoroughly examine your mouth, and will custom-design your dental orthotic so that it fits your smile comfortably and effectively, allowing you to sleep peacefully while protecting your smile. We invite you to contact us today to learn more about occlusal guards and how we can prevent teeth grinding. We are dedicated to providing the best possible care for your smile.
